Senate Race in Mass Is Entertaining

In the last few days of the special election to fill the senate left vacant by the death of Ted Kennedy, the behavior of the Democrats is becoming hilarious at best and plain old “hokey” at worst. The latest from Democrat Candidate Martha Coakley is to refer to Red Sox legend Kurt Schilling as a Yankees fan. Even for those not into baseball, the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees is well known. It was Schilling, who in the 2004 playoffs led the Red Sox to a key win over the Yankees and then on to a World Series Championship. To say that Mr. Schilling is a hero in Boston and the rest of the state would be appropriate.

However, Ms. Coakley referred to Mr. Schilling as “another Yankees fan” during a radio interview when it was pointed out to her that he, along with Rudy Giuliani, is supporting her Republican opponent, Scott Brown. Ms. Coakley had already pointed out that Mr. Giuliani was a well known Yankees fan. Mr. Schilling was not amused by Ms. Coakley and responded on his blog:

I’ve been called a lot of things, but never, I mean never, could anyone make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan. Well, check that. If you didn’t know what the hell is going on in your own state, maybe you could.”

Ms. Coakley is already trailing Mr. Brown in several polls, and a gaffe like that could be final nail in her coffin. In a state where baseball is so revered, Ms. Coakley calling their hero Curt Schilling a Yankees fan is just too “out of touch”. A lack of baseball knowledge should not determine the outcome of an important election, but this goes deeper. Ms. Coakley shows herself to be totally out of touch with the people of the state by this remark.
