Democrats, You Should Pay Attention To Europe
Democrats, you should be paying attention to the changing political tide in Europe. You remember Europe, the area of the world that you seem to be doing your best to emulate. European Socialism is slowly heading towards collapse and you are trying to lead the United States of America in that same direction. What are you thinking? Do you really believe that you are immune to fate of European Socialists and Liberals?
German voters handed the Social Democratic Party it’s worst defeat since World War II, giving it only 23 percent of the vote. Voters also punished left-leaning candidates in the summer’s European Parliament elections and trounced French Socialists in 2007. Where the left holds power, as in Spain and Britain, it is under attack. Where it is out, as in France, Italy and now Germany, it is divided and listless.
According to Tony Judt, director of the Remarque Institute at New York University:
European Socialists need to think a lot harder about what the state can and can’t do in the 21st century. They espouse a radical platform which they cannot deliver. I don’t think Socialism in Europe has a future; and given that it is a core constitutive part of the European democratic consensus, that’s bad news.
American Socialist Democrats you should take advantage of the lessons which your European heroes are having to pay to learn. Just as Europeans are becoming fed up with big government and high taxes, so will the American people become just as fed up. Will they make you pay the price in the 2010 Congressional elections? I expect that answer will be yes, unless you begin to see the handwriting on the wall.
