Is Obama Preparing For A Third Term?
Today Rush Limbaugh talked about the possibility that President Obama is already laying the groundwork for a third term as president. He may be right, because there is already legislation that has been introduced by Rep. Jose Serrano, D-N.Y to repeal the 22nd Amendment. There is also a website, “end22.com” that is asking for donations to fund a grass-roots effort to repeal the amendment that limits a person from serving more that two full terms as president. For those that are not aware, the 22nd Amendment was passed in 1951 due to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election to four terms as president.
Rush had this to say about the possibility:
He may not openly try to change the Constitution. But there might be this movement in the country from his ‘cult-like’ followers to support the notion that a democratically-elected leader who is ‘loved’ and ‘adored’ has carte blanche once elected — just serve as long as he wants because the people demand it, because the people want it, because the people love it.
The desire to serve beyond 2016 could be the reason President is pressuring the nation of Honduras to return ousted leftist President Manuel Zelaya to office. Zelaya was removed from office by the Honduran Army over a dispute about presidential term limits. Zelaya intended to hold a referendum, much the same as Hugo Chavez did, with the intention of abolishing the country’s presidential term limit. Despite the pressure being applied to the interim government of Honduras to return Zelaya to power, the current leaders of the nation say there is “no chance at all” that he will return to office.
When asked if President Obama supports the legislation, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, “I think the president is firmly in support of an amendment that would limit his time in the presidency to eight years if he’s given that awesome responsibility by the American people.”
Limbaugh disagreed with Mr. Gibbs saying:
I wouldn’t put it past Obama to be plotting right now how to serve beyond 2016, and I think [that’s the reason for the] way he’s reacting to what’s happening in Honduras. They’ve got a constitution. They’re a democratically elected set of officials down there, and you had a guy running the country, Mel Zelaya, who was just going to basically rip that country’s democracy to shreds and the country moved in to stop him from doing it. And Obama sides with the guy who wanted to rip up the constitution. Anybody who thinks [Obama] intends to just constitutionally go away in 2016 is nuts. I think that’s what all this ACORN stuff is all about. I think given ACORN money and fraudulent voter registration — whatever it’s going to take — these are people who seek power for reasons other than to serve. They seek to rule.
With his approval ratings already beginning to fall, President Obama should worry about being elected to a second term before arrogantly trying to figure a way to get around constitutional term limits. If the economy doesn’t improve within the next year, he could see his party’s majority in both houses of Congress vanish right before his eyes as a result of the 2010 elections. People are beginning to realize that big government, with all of its trappings, is not the answer to our problems.
