Letterman Apologizes-Again
David Letterman’s “kinda-sorta” apology last week obviously did not go over well. Today he issued a more sincere apology, including an explanation that he had no idea that 14 year-old Willow Palin was with her mother at the Yankees ball game.
Letterman had this to say:
I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor, and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. … So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I understand, of course, why people are upset; I would be upset myself. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future.
Letterman has found himself in the middle of the controversy that may not only cost him his upcoming two year contract extension, but may ultimately cost him his job as a talk show host. What I don’t understand is why he thinks his remarks are any less offensive just because he intended them to be about Mrs. Palin’s older daughter, Bristol. Nor do I understand why other commentators try to defend his mistake. The comments were not acceptable about Willow nor were they acceptable about Bristol. There is also one other thing that I don’t understand, and that is why flight attendants have given him a pass on an obvious insult to them and their profession.
