The Depressing State Of Our Nation
As I was trying to decide what to write about for today’s post, I couldn’t help but become somewhat depressed about the state of our once great nation. We used to be the leaders of the world, now we are rapidly sinking to position of a “has been”, and even a laughing stock in some circles. Our industries used to be second to none, now we are in a position of having to borrow trillions of dollars just to maintain a place in the world. Or do we have to borrow all of this money? What would have happened if we would have let our free market based capitalist economy work as designed? We’ve given billions of dollars to two of what were once known as the big three automakers, and what did it get us? Had we not given all that money to Chrysler and GM, they would have surely had to file bankruptcy. Yet, they filed bankruptcy anyway with our government and the Canadian government now owning 72.5% of GM. Chrysler is the process of being sold to Fiat. What happened to GM’s stockholders? They haven’t received any relief in this deal. The remaining 27.5% of the “new” GM is being divided up between the UAW and existing bondholders. By the way, I read an article on the Financial Times website that says auto sales are rallying world wide. Either President Obama is a miracle worker or, more likely, free market principles are beginning to work in spite of his efforts.
If this wasn’t bad enough, look at the mess our banking system is in. Many of the largest banks in the country were forced to take money from government. Once the banking executives found about all the strings that were attached to the government’s money and wanted to give it back, they were told no. (For those of you that are sitting there screaming, that its NOT THE GOVERNMENT’S MONEY, I realize that.) What did it buy us? We were told that the billions would be made available to be infused back into the economy in the form of loans, but credit is still very tight.
Now we are being told that our healthcare system must be overhauled, and the government wants to play a major role in administering the “new” healthcare system. What will that be like? What will that be like? The government is already doing such a great job with Medicare and Medicaid, government run healthcare can only be a similar huge success.
After the terrorists attacks on September 11th, many cried foul when the Bush Administration enacted measures designed to keep us safe from people who still want to kill us. I remember the same people that are so quickly taking over American owned businesses now, complaining loudly about all of the freedoms and rights that were being taken from us. Why are they not complaining now? Who is going to stand up and fight for our rights now? At what point do we say enough is enough?
While it didn’t get very much coverage in the mainstream media, which I’ve lately heard being referred to as the State Media, some politicians are toying with the idea of a national sales tax of roughly 10%. Will the imposition of such a punitive tax be enough to wake up our fellow citizens? Or, are we traveling down the road to full blown socialism that nothing will stop descent? I had lunch with a friend today and the state of our nation came up in conversation, as it usually does. My friend is just as concerned about our future as I am and he asked one simple question, “What can we do about it?”
Speaking of the State Media, there is hope. As many newspapers and other mainstream media outlets are seeing declines in their revenues, one newspaper, based in Washington saw its circulation increase by .07% during the first three months of this year after making an effort to be fair in its reporting. If other mainstream media outlets see this turnaround, they may follow suit. Maybe the state of our nation isn’t quite as bad I see it tonight. I can only hope.

Cheer up.. Though who am I to talk. I’ve been feeling depressed about the current state of things myself. Though unlike you, I have fear of “the uncertainty” of the future of this country. Not just depression while reading your nostalgic run down of our once admired and envied economy.
