Sonia Sotomayor Is A Member of ‘La Raza’

Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama’s nominee as Supreme Court Justice, is coming under increased criticism for being a racist due to comments made in a 2001 speech in which she said that a wise Latina woman would be able to reach better conclusions than a white male. Critics of Judge Sotomayor’s comments include Ann Coulter, Newt Gingrich, and Rush Limbaugh.

Ann Coulter said on ABC’s Good Morning America, “I’m not saying she’s a racist, but the statement sure is.” Newt Gingrich said in his blog, “Imagine a judicial nominee said ‘my experience as a white man makes me better than a Latina woman. Wouldn’t they have to withdraw? New racism is no better than old racism. A white man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. A Latina woman racist should also withdraw.” Rush Limbaugh said, “And the Libs of course say that minorities cannot be racists because they don’t have the power to implement their racism. Well, those days are gone because reverse racists certainly do have the power to implement their power. Obama is the greatest living example of a reverse racist, and now he’s appointed one.”

Her racist statements may not be enough for many people to come to the conclusion that she should withdraw. However, that is not the only skeleton in her closet. She is also is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that’s promoted driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, amnesty programs, and no immigration law enforcement by local and state police, and is a member of the NCLR, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S.

La Raza, which means “the Race”, also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America. Dick Morris says she will be confirmed by the Senate, but I have to ask, “Do we need a justice with a life time appointment, who thinks that several southwestern states should secede from the rest of the United States?” Remember the furor over TX Governor Rick Perry’s comments which implied Texas might leave the Union? Where is the furor over this?

On a parting note, I want to mention Karl Rove’s article in the Wall Street Journal, where he reminds us that President Obama said he wants his nominee to be someone who has “empathy”. Mr. Rove had this to say about empathy:

“Empathy” is the latest code word for liberal activism, for treating the Constitution as malleable clay to be kneaded and molded in whatever form justices want. It represents an expansive view of the judiciary in which courts create policy that couldn’t pass the legislative branch or, if it did, would generate voter backlash.
