Sunday’s Stuff 5-24-2009
Sunday seems to be a good day to review some of the news events of the past week, some that I have written about and some that I haven’t. If you would like to receive this weekly review via email, send me a note to bill@theconservativenation.com. This week’s review includes:
President Obama’s Notre Dame Commencement Address
President Obama delivered the commencement address for Notre Dame’s graduating class of 2009 and received an honorary degree. There were many protests due to the president’s pro-choice view being in direct conflict with the right to life views of the Catholic Church. Read the transcript of the president’s speech here.
Obama Sets New Standards For Auto Emissions
President Obama campaigned on a platform of “Change You Can Believe In”, and there is one thing you can believe, he is changing things. This time he is changing auto mileage and gas emission requirements for American cars and trucks. The new regulations, set to take effect in 2016, will be the first ever nationwide standards for greenhouse gas limits and mileage requirements. Read the complete post here.
Five Steps For Ending Political Correctness
In an article written for Andrew Breitbart’s Big Hollywood, James Hudnall wrote how early in the 20th century many poor and downtrodden people throughout the world thought that Marxism was a good idea. However, people weren’t exactly following the principles of Marxism and the Marxists couldn’t change governments without the consent of the people. So they had to work out a system that would undermine the unity of a society, putting into practice the old saying, “United we stand, divided we fall”. That system became Political Correctness (PC). Since only leftists and bureaucrats like PC and the rest of us hate it, Mr. Hudnall has come up with five steps for killing it. Read the complete post here.
Limbaugh Resigns
On his nationally broadcasted radio show today, Rush Limbaugh resigned. He told listeners that he has been been made the “titular head of the Republican party” by members of the “drive-by media” and Obama White House. But he claims to not want the crown. “I am resigning,” Limbaugh said. “I am resigning as the titular head of the Republican Party.” He went on to say that he was handing the reigns of the party over to someone more “qualified and capable” to be head of the GOP, Colin Powell. See Rush resign here.
Iran’s Launch of Solid-propellent Rockets
I’m sure that you’ve heard about Iran’s recent test launch of what has been described by Defense Secretary Robert Gates as the longest-range solid-propellant missile it has launched yet. The missile has a range of up to 1,500 miles, which puts Israel, U.S. bases in the Mideast, and parts of Eastern Europe within striking distance. The White House reaction? “Obviously, that’s concerning.” Read the complete post here.
Pelosi Refuses To Answer Questions On Dispute With CIA
In an earlier post, I wrote about Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi accusing the CIA of lying when they said she was informed in the fall of 2002 that Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT, and PC code name for waterboarding). Friday, she and fellow democrats were providing details on their plans for addressing global warming, when she was asked about her claim. Mrs. Pelosi would not comment. Read the complete post here.
Obama, Cheney clash over terrorism
President Obama on Thursday vigorously defended his decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention site but said some terrorist suspects would be held indefinitely, setting up the prospect of a painstaking fight with Congress over relocating detainees to the United States and disappointing supporters critical of what they saw as a concession to Bush-era policies. Immediately afterward, in a downtown building several blocks away, Mr. Cheney rebutted much of the president’s message. He blasted protests over the enhanced interrogation techniques he approved for use on a handful of detainees – procedures that some in the White House call torture and that the president has outlawed.
